Prize Amount: 2-year institution, $1,000- and 4-year institution: $2,000

Deadline: July 19, 2024

Requirements:

I. Copy of ID validating foreign country descent; the student or parent must provide proof of foreign nationality.

II. Copy of school official transcript (must have school seal and signature).

III. Academic or Professional recommendation letter.

IV. Create a 3–5-minute video about you and upload it to YouTube Let’s get to know you!

  1. Introduction: Include a brief personal introduction highlighting your academic background, interests, and career goals.
  2. Video Essay: Create a 3-5 minute video essay discussing your educational journey, experiences, and how the scholarship will contribute to your goals.
  3. Achievements and Extracurricular Activities: Highlight any relevant achievements, awards, or extracurricular activities that demonstrate your skills and commitment.
  4. Financial Need Statement: If applicable, include a statement detailing your financial need and how the scholarship will alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with your education.
  5. Future Plans: Discuss your future plans and aspirations, emphasizing how the scholarship will support your long-term goals.
  6. Community Involvement: Share any community service or volunteer work you’ve been involved in to underscore your commitment to giving back.
  7. Creativity Showcase (Optional): If applicable, showcase your creativity through a brief presentation, artwork, or project related to your field of study.
  8. Closing Statement: Conclude the video with a strong closing statement.
Who can apply

Live in the following counties: Dallas, Tarrant, Rockwall, Ellis, Collin, Hunt, Kaufman, Denton, Hood, Wise, Johnson, and Parker.
Plan to enroll in an undergraduate course (12 credit hours): 2-year or 4-year institutions.
Must be: current senior in high school or graduate, or current in postsecondary undergraduate (25 years of age or younger as of the application deadline).

Any currently enrolled UTA undergraduate student who has completed one MALS course with a grade of “B” or better

What you need

A letter of application that includes:

  • the name of the MALS course you took, and when
  • a statement about your interest in Mexican American & Latina/o studies and/or volunteer work done in any Latino community (300 word minimum)
  • a current phone number or other contact information

Brandenburg Scholarship: MAS Minors

Prize Amount: $1,500

Deadline: April 14, 2023

Requirements

Who can apply

A declared MALS minor who:

  • Is a Student in Good Standing with UT-Arlington
  • Is carrying at least 9 hours of coursework during Spring 2023
  • Will carry at least 9 hours of coursework in Fall 2023
  • Holds a 3.0 GPA or higher
What you need

Two page typed statement that includes:

  • Name, mailing address, phone number, UTA e-mail address
  • Describes how minoring in Mexican American & Latina/o Studies fits into your career or further educational plans
  • How you have made a contribution thus far to the Mexican American community (ex. Volunteer work; internships through Service Learning classes, student teaching, etc.)

Brandenburg Scholarship: Latino Studies in the College of Liberal Arts

Prize Amount: $1,500

Deadline: April 14, 2023

Requirements

Who can apply

A student majoring in any department in the College of Liberal Arts who:

  • Is a Student in Good Standing with UT-Arlington
  • Has completed one MALS course with a grade of “B” or better
  • Is carrying at least 9 hours of coursework during Spring 2020
  • Will carry at least 9 hours of coursework in Fall 2020
  • Holds a 3.0 GPA or higher

Note: Student does NOT have to be a MALS minor

What you need

Two page typed statement that includes:

  • Name, mailing address, phone number, UTA e-mail address
  • Describe how your university course of study in the College of Liberal Arts prepares you for further education and/or a career focusing on Latinos in the U.S. or Latin American Studies (ex: post-baccalaureate degree in these areas; direct entry into career in these areas).
  • Statement should also include any work you have already done in service to the Latino community in the US or abroad (ex. Volunteer work; internships through Service Learning classes, teaching, etc.).

Brandenburg Scholarship: Graduate Students

Prize Amount: $2,500

Who can apply

A graduate student in research on any topics related to the Latinx experience in the United States

What you need

Submit your application to Dr. Cristina Salinas to csalinas@uta.edu, include the following information:

  • Name, UTA ID number, UTA e-mail address
  • A statement explaining your research interest, professional goals, & plans for the graduate degree (1-2 pages)
  • A description of how you will use the awarded funds
  • A budget itemizing the specific cost involved
  • A description of any volunteer work done in a U.S. Latinx community
